The dentist can only do so much in restoring a tooth with fillings. Sometimes the structure of the tooth is compromised, or it needs the re-enforcement of being completely capped with a crown. At Dr Mexico we use 4 types of dental crowns. After all the decay has been removed, and the tooth has been reconstructed with resin composite, it will need to be shaved down to fit underneath a crown, which will seal it from further decomposition.
PFM crowns are made of a thin metal cap that fits over the tooth, and which is overlaid and fused with porcelain. On the inside it is dental quality metal, but on the outside, it looks just like a tooth should look. It is the least expensive crown, and is not as esthetic, but is still an industry standard. It is strong, and even if the porcelain somehow chips, it is the metal cap that protects the tooth. They are best used on molar teeth, rather than front teeth. The cost is about $350.
All porcelain e.max crowns are very aesthetic and look nice on the “smile” teeth in the front. However, they are more fragile, and are not suitable for molars. Cost is $425 per crown
Zirconia Crowns are designed by digitally scanning the prepared teeth, and then designing the new teeth with a cad-cam program, cutting zirconium blocks to the shape of the teeth, and firing the material in a kiln. Sometimes porcelain is added to the front layer for better aesthetics. These crowns are very strong and seal better than other crowns. They are very durable. The cost is $495 per crown,
Bruxzir crowns are also made od zirconia, but of a special, denser material, that are practically bullet proof. These crowns have a 7 year guarantee against breaking. The cost is $550
