What are dental Veneers?
Most people understand that a crown is a cap the covers the tooth. The main difference between crowns and veneers is that the veneer mainly covers the front visible side of the tooth, but do not cover the entire tooth. The front enamel must be shaved down a little, as well as the sides and top of the tooth. This give the veneer a good surface to bond to, without shaving down the full tooth. Veneers are mainly used for cosmetic smile makeovers. A set of veneers can fill in gaps between teeth, give teeth a nicer shape and contour, and stay white.
What are veneers made of?
Veneers are generally made of a special porcelain, which has a very natural appearance. There are also some newer types of zirconia that is more translucent, and give a natural look, while being more chip resistant.
What is the limitation of veneers?
Veneers won’t hold as strongly as a crown. You must be more careful when you bite into things, so as not to dislodge them. Usually, a person doesn’t have any problems, but the patient has to be aware. The type of veneers promoted as no prep, Lumineers, only have cement holding them on, and those veneers have a high failure rate. But properly prepped veneers can las 15 years with no problem.
Veneers cannot be used to replace a crown. Once the whole tooth has been shaved down, it will take a crown to replace a crown. But if a veneer fails, it can always be replaced with a crown.
The main benefit of veneers is that les tooth has less enamel removed, and is thus more natural tooth remains.
