Getting Picked Up at the Border

Most of our patients choose to park on the U.S. side of the border and walk across into Mexico. This is often the easiest and most convenient option, as it avoids driving in Tijuana traffic and eliminates the need to navigate unfamiliar streets.

After crossing at the San Ysidro pedestrian crossing, our patient coordinator can provide detailed pickup instructions and help coordinate transportation to our clinic in Zona Río. The clinic is only a short drive from the border crossing.

If you are unsure which crossing point to use or need assistance before your appointment, our team will be happy to guide you through the process.

Traveling from out of town? Visit our Is Tijuana Safe for Dental Tourism? page for information about border crossings, transportation, hotels, and visitor safety.

Parking on the U.S. Side

Several secure paid parking lots are available near the San Ysidro border crossing. Many patients find it convenient to leave their vehicle in the United States and walk across the border before being picked up.

Parking rates and availability may vary, so we recommend arriving early and allowing extra time for border crossing procedures.

Flying to Tijuana for Dental Treatment

Many of our patients travel from throughout the United States and Canada for dental implants, or All-on-4 treatment, or cosmetic dentistry, and full mouth rehabilitation.

Patients may fly into either San Diego International Airport or Tijuana International Airport depending on their travel plans and flight availability.

Flying into San Diego International Airport (SAN)

San Diego International Airport is the most common arrival point for many of our patients.

After arriving in San Diego, patients can travel to the San Ysidro border crossing by taxi, rideshare service, shuttle, or rental car. Once across the border, transportation can be coordinated to our clinic.

This option often provides the greatest number of flight choices and competitive airfare pricing.

Flying into Tijuana International Airport

Patients may also fly directly into Tijuana International Airport.

The airport is located within Tijuana and offers convenient access to our clinic. Taxi and rideshare services are readily available, making transportation simple and straightforward.

Patients arriving through the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) bridge can cross directly between San Diego and Tijuana Airport without entering the traditional border crossing lines.

Driving Directly to Our Clinic

Some patients prefer to drive directly into Tijuana and travel to the clinic in their own vehicle.

Our office is conveniently located in Zona Río, one of Tijuana’s primary medical and business districts. The area offers easy access from the border and several nearby parking options.

Many patients combine treatment with shopping, dining, or an overnight stay in Tijuana before returning to the United States.

We recommend allowing additional travel time during busy border crossing periods and checking current traffic conditions before departure.

U.S. Passport Recommended

A valid U.S. passport is strongly recommended when traveling to Mexico and returning to the United States. Border requirements can change, so patients should confirm current travel requirements before their visit.

If you do not currently have a passport, contact our patient coordination team before scheduling travel. We can help you understand practical options and provide appointment confirmation if needed.

What If I Don't Have a Passport?

Many patients contact us because they are ready to schedule treatment but realize they don’t have a valid passport. The good news is that this situation can often be resolved much faster than people expect.

If you are planning dental treatment in Tijuana, you should obtain a valid U.S. passport before traveling. A passport is the easiest and most reliable document for crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

If your appointment is approaching and you do not have a passport, you may qualify for urgent passport service through the U.S. Department of State. Patients traveling internationally within 14 calendar days may be eligible to make an appointment at a U.S. Passport Agency or Center rather than waiting for routine processing. Eligibility, appointment availability, and processing times are determined by the U.S. government.

Our patient coordinator can provide a confirmation letter for your scheduled dental appointment if you need documentation showing the purpose and date of your international travel. Many patients use this letter when requesting an urgent passport appointment.

How the Passport Process Typically Works

  • Schedule your dental appointment with our office.
  • Contact our patient coordinator if you need an appointment confirmation letter.
  • Visit the U.S. Department of State website to determine whether you qualify for urgent passport service.
  • Schedule an appointment with the nearest U.S. Passport Agency or Center if you meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Bring all required documents, including proof of citizenship, identification, passport photos, your completed application, and proof of upcoming international travel.
  • Once your passport is issued, you’re ready to travel to Tijuana for your appointment.
  • From personal experience, once your appointment is set, you can usually leave that same day, or next day at latest.

Don't Wait Until the Last Minute

If your travel date is still several weeks away, routine or expedited passport service may be the appropriate option. However, if your dental appointment is less than two weeks away, contact the U.S. Department of State immediately to determine whether you qualify for urgent processing.

Because appointment availability varies by location and demand, we recommend beginning the process as soon as possible after scheduling your dental treatment.

If you’re concerned that not having a passport will delay your dental treatment, don’t assume you have to cancel your plans. Contact our office first. We’ll explain your options, provide an appointment confirmation letter if appropriate, and help you understand the next steps. While passport issuance is handled entirely by the U.S. Department of State, we’re happy to assist you with the documentation needed for your upcoming visit.
